Jerhico Loch

Jerhico Loch

Small waves crackle
along the loch edge.
Small waves,
but deep enough
to douse
all those doubts
that simmer.

We are calm,
our eyes warmed
by the flicker
of sun on water,
and there!,
the flash
of a dragonfly.

Who knew?
The loch could hold
so many stars,
Who knew?
we could glimpse
the spark between
grass tip and air.

I am a photographer/ poet from Dumfries in South West Scotland. I concentrate on minimalist images and prefer using an iPhone these days. As far as my writing is concerned, I usually write short poems (some in Scots dialect), hence my interest in haiku and related forms.

  Magic place right enough. Strangely, that Loch is only less than a mile from our house. Never paid to much attention to it until lockdown and we were only allowed short walks. Amazing how you look at things differently in such times and appreciated the beauty all around you. Opens your eyes somehow. Sure you’ve felt the same.

    Yes, I have. I remember the first time I felt that way was returning for a visit to Vermont after living in Virginia for a couple of years. We rounded a curve in the road, and I saw the Mississquoi river before me with the Green Mountains rising behind it. The view was so beautiful it took my breath away. I had ridden that stretch of road thousands of times growing up and never noticed.
